Meru is a superb Big Five destination. Extending over 870-square-kilometres of lush well-watered savannah east of Mount Kenya, Meru National Park is transitional to the moist central highlands and arid northern plains of Kenya. Wildlife, though plentiful, can be quite elusive, and the park is most notable perhaps for its untrammelled wilderness feel. Nevertheless, it is a good place to see localised large mammals associated with the arid north, including the handsome reticulated giraffe, striking Beisa oryx, shy lesser kudu and stretch-necked gerenuk antelope. The Big Five are all present too: with large herds of buffalo being a feature of the marshes, while more than 50 black and white rhinos have been introduced into a large Rhino Santuary inside the park since 2005.

Weather permitting we visit Tana River, the Headquarters for Kora National Park where George Adamson and Joy of The Born Free movie fame and Elsa spent their lives. Adamson falls and crocodiles.

Day One: Nairobi Meru.

  • Pickup from the Hotel or airport and drive towards Meru National Park via Nairobi - Nanyuki - Isiolo Maua/Meru route.
  • Brief stop at the Equator Crossing 1 Km to Nanyuki town.
  • Along the way you will be able to see peaks of Mt Kenya if weather will be good enough.
  • Arrive at the Ikweta Safari Camp in time for a late lunch and end out for an evening game drive into the nearby Meru National Park (Less then 2 KM from Murera Gate).
  • Dinner and overnight stay at the camp.
Day Two: Meru National Park.
  • Explore Meru National Park in morning and evening game drives.
  • Leave the camp after break fast and proceed with game drive till mid morning
  • Usually the park is very hot during the day and it is a good idea to return and relax by the camp pool or room awaiting the temperatures to cool down.
  • Evening game drive follows after lunch where we be visiting the Rhino Santuary inside the Meru National Park.
  • Return for dinner and overnight stay at the camp
Day Three: Tana River/Kora National Park.
  • We leave the camp with packed breakfast and lunch and by 6.00 we are at the gate
  • Drive with game viewing towards Tana River Bridge ( Adamsons Bridge) the head quarters for Kora National Park
  • This is where George Adamson also known as Baba ya Simba (Father of lions) used to live.
  • Learn a little history about his life and conservation work while at Kora, Enjoy the scenic views of the wide River Tana and the Adamson Falls.
  • Later drive back to Meru National Park, have your lunch at Bwatherongi Camping site.
  • Relax and wait for the sun to go down and we can proceed with another game drive as we drive towards the camp again.
  • Dinner and overnight at the camp.
Alternative during rainy season.
  • During Rainy season crossing some parmanent rivers inside of meru National park like the River Bwatherongi can be impossible and in this case we leave after the morning game drive for Ol Pejeta conservancy instead of Kora.
  • Spend the night at Sweet Waters inside  Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
Day 4: Meru - Nairobi.
  • After breakfast we leave the camp and drive back to Nairobi.
  • We have a lunch stop at Nanyuki town or Sagana before proceeding to Nairobi where you be dropped at airport or your city hotel.
  • In case you decide to take Ol Pejeta Option you leave after a morning game drive and drive to Nairobi with lunch break at Sagana.
End of the tour.
